Portrait with Flowers is a personal character study exploring the intersection of hyperrealistic figure sculpting and botanical detail work. The piece centres on a young woman in period costume — a polka dot scarf, an off-shoulder blouse — crowned with an elaborate arrangement of chrysanthemums, dahlias and hydrangeas sculpted with the same anatomical rigour applied to the figure itself. Each flower was sculpted individually in ZBrush, petal by petal, with attention to the natural variation in curl, damage and translucency that distinguishes a convincing botanical render from a generic one.
The chrysanthemums presented the central technical challenge: their dense layered petal structures demanded a subdivision workflow that holds detail at the macro level of the full crown while resolving micro-level curl of individual petals in the same scene. The figure's skin was built using a Textures XYZ workflow for pore-level surface detail, with a multi-layer SSS setup in Blender Cycles calibrated to interact with the strong directional daylight of the composition.
The choice of a clear blue sky background was deliberate — it places maximum emphasis on the warm tones of the skin, the jewel tones of the flowers, and the graphic quality of the polka dot fabric against a clean ground. The result demonstrates range beyond anatomy: the ability to design, sculpt and render complex organic secondary elements that serve a larger compositional vision. For any art director commissioning character work where environment, props or costuming are equally important to the figure, this piece is the direct evidence.
