Bayala Character Sculpts — Schleich Toy Design | Anna Schmelzer

The Schleich Bayala engagement is Anna's longest-running commercial relationship — a decade of continuous character sculpting for one of Europe's most recognised toy brands. Schleich's Bayala line is a fantasy range of fairies, unicorns, mermaids and mythical creatures sold in over 60 countries, demanding consistently high sculpt quality at production scale.

Working from 2D character designs provided by Schleich's in-house design team, the workflow involves interpreting flat concept art into three-dimensional production sculpts that must satisfy multiple constraints simultaneously: visual accuracy to the 2D design, correct proportions for the target age group, structural integrity for injection moulding, absence of undercuts that would complicate tooling, and sufficient surface detail to read at a 6–10cm production scale.

The Blossom Pegasus is a signature piece from the line — a winged horse character with elaborate flower and crystal decorative elements across the wings and mane. The sculpt required balancing delicate decorative geometry (thin wing membrane, petal forms) with the structural requirements of a child's toy that must survive drop tests and repeated handling.

The Bayala engagement has also included Marvel licensed hero characters — commercially sensitive work that demonstrates Anna's capability to work with IP-holder requirements and brand guideline constraints on top of the standard production demands.

This long-term relationship is a direct reflection of what toy manufacturers need from a freelance sculptor: consistency, reliability, the ability to absorb and apply brand guidelines, and the technical knowledge to deliver sculpts that survive the manufacturing process intact.
